Protecting our local Post Offices

Post Office

Great Yarmouth Conservatives are calling for urgent assurances about the future of our local Post Offices – particularly the Gorleston High Street branch, which remains the only place in Gorleston where residents and businesses can deposit cash safely and securely.

Across the country, proposals are being reviewed that could lead to the closure of up to half of Britain’s post offices. Here in Great Yarmouth, that could mean losing 11 of our 22 branches — a move that would have a devastating impact on small businesses, older residents, and anyone who relies on face-to-face banking and postal services.

This threat comes as the government considers ending the Post Office subsidy — a vital source of support that helps keep smaller branches running. Nearly half of Britain’s Post Offices currently operate at a loss, after being hit with higher business rates and increased employer National Insurance contributions.

A cornerstone of Gorleston High Street

The Gorleston Post Office is far more than a counter — it’s a cornerstone of the High Street. Local shopkeepers and small businesses depend on it to deposit cash safely and conveniently. For many residents, it provides access to essential financial and postal services that simply aren’t available elsewhere.

Losing this branch would not only inconvenience residents — it would weaken Gorleston’s High Street, reduce footfall for local traders, and make it harder for businesses to operate day-to-day.

Standing up for local services

Local Conservative Association Chairman Graham Plant said:

“The local Post Office is more than a counter. For local residents it’s a trusted service and essential for postal services and cash handling. Local Conservatives in Great Yarmouth are determined to fight to protect this vital service available for all across our Borough”

Association spokesperson for economic matters Daniel Candon added:

“Protecting Gorleston’s Post Office is about protecting local access to essential financial services and supporting small business. When businesses can bank locally, it keeps money on our High Street and strengthens our local economy. We have always believed in backing business and empowering communities — and that’s exactly what we’ll continue to do here in Great Yarmouth.”

Protecting vital community services

Local Conservatives are now writing to the government and Post Office leadership to ensure that communities like Gorleston, Great Yarmouth, and our surrounding villages retain access to key financial and postal services. These services play a vital role in supporting our high streets and rural villages, keeping money local, and ensuring residents can access the everyday essentials they rely on.
