With our stunning coastline and growing seal population, Great Yarmouth has a special responsibility to protect the marine life that calls this area home. That’s why we're proud to support the Seal Alliance Flying Ring campaign, which aims to end the sale and use of flying rings with holes – a small change that could save countless seals from injury and distress.
Why It Matters for Great Yarmouth
Seals are an iconic part of our coastal landscape, delighting residents and visitors alike. But what many don’t realise is how vulnerable they are to everyday plastic toys. Flying rings, especially those with a central hole, pose a serious risk – curious seals can get them stuck around their necks, leading to painful injuries or even death.
Great Yarmouth is one of the UK’s key seal habitats, particularly around the Gorleston, Winterton, and Horsey coastline. As community champions, Great Yarmouth Conservatives believe it’s our duty to raise awareness and push for better, safer alternatives.
Councillors Speak Out in Support
Cllr Paul Wells, Cabinet Member for Environment at Great Yarmouth Borough Council said publicly:
"Our coastal wildlife is precious, and it's our duty to protect it. The injuries caused by flying rings to seals are entirely preventable. I fully support the Seal Alliance’s campaign to raise awareness and urge both retailers and beachgoers to make safer choices."
Cllr James Bensley, Cabinet Member for Coastal at Great Yarmouth Borough Council, also joined the call to action:
"Flying rings might seem like harmless fun, but they’re causing real harm to our local seal population. By backing the Seal Alliance’s campaign, we’re standing up for responsible recreation that respects and safeguards our unique marine life."
What You Can Do
- Avoid buying or using flying rings with holes – opt for solid alternatives.
- Talk to local shops and holiday parks about switching to seal-safe toys.
- Spread the word – share the campaign and help educate others.
This is a small change that can have a huge impact. If we want our children and grandchildren to continue enjoying the sight of healthy seals along our shores, we must take responsibility now.
Let’s show that Great Yarmouth is proud to protect its coast.
